FILM: Black and white, 4"X5" sheet film. Sheet film comes in 25, 50 or 100 sheet boxes. Any brand is fine. Most students use faster (ISO 320 or 400) speed film such as Ilford HP5+ or Kodak Tri-X. The first project requires black and white and it will take about 25 sheets. All other projects can be done in either black and white or color. You will need negative sleeves and a binder to organize negatives, contacts and handouts.
PAPER: Black and white fiberbase paper as required, 11"X14", double weight. Ilford FB Multigrade, Kodak Polymax FB, Oriental New Seagul VC, Arista Multigrade, and Brilliant are recommended. Glossy fiber based paper is by far the best choice for printing architectural photographs. Use resin coated paper for contact sheets. You can use inkjet paper or RA4 printing for projects other than the architectural assignment.
PROCESSING SUPPLIES: You will need a thermometer and a towel. You also need 4X5 negative sleeves and a complete set of variable contrast filters. A dust brush or canned air is essential for cleaning negative holders before loading.
FINISHING MATERIALS: Archival print storage box or portfolio, and print sleeves. You may choose to mat your final project, in which case you will need smooth white or off white archival mat board and archival tape. Matting is not required. Spot toning supplies will be provide by the professor.
EQUIPMENT:
A focusing cloth, ideally a black cloth at least one square yard.
At least two 4X5 film holders
A focusing lupe
A Light meter. It is possible, but not ideal, to use your SLR camera as a meter. Light meter aps for your smart phone can be functional if used properly.
Materials Provided: Black and white darkroom equipment and space, large-format camera equipment, print finishing equipment, studio facilities and lighting equipment.
There will be a lab fee collected for chemistry and RA4 printing,The fee must be paid before you will be allowed to use the facilities.
